Farm Fresh

My most recent CSA box contained the same produce I’ve gotten all summer.

Bell peppers and onions, rather puny again

Banana peppers

Eggplant

And a nice surprise – 2 pounds of fresh shelled blackeyed peas.

I also got more okra but I’m so sick of okra. It goobers up my knife, the cutting board, and the pan I cook it in, and I still just don’t enjoy it.

I also had some potatoes from a previous box and some local calabaza squash, which is similar to zucchini but always much cheaper at the store. Normally I just chop everything up and sauté it.

For this version, I decided to add in a nice sauce. I used Gee Whiz sauce from The Saucy Vegetarian, which thankfully tasted nothing like Cheese Whiz! I hadn’t made a good, noochy sauce in a long time and I really enjoyed it. It’s a no-cook sauce I just whizzed up in the miniprep.

I added the sauce to the cooked veggies and let it heat through. The blackeyed peas were simmered in a broth. I love fresh peas because they cook in just 20 minutes. Along with a side of fresh steamed broccoli, I had myself a quite delicious and very fresh dinner.

I also got some more Flying Saucer squash.

My Stuffed Flying Saucer Squash post was featured on two weekly “Best Of” blogs, so I’ll have to come up with another tasty way to prepare these. I wonder if they would make good chips. They would make nice flower shapes.

I’m sad I can’t participate in VeganMoFo this year. Work is just too busy. I will post as often as I can though to join at least in spirit. I was a MoFo’er the past two years, and last year I posted EVERY DAY! But I will just enjoy this year’s festivities from the sidelines and look forward to meeting new bloggers and reading about lots of great, healthy, vegan food. Have fun, MoFo’ers!

That does look like a very delicious and very fresh dinner! How cute are those Flying Saucer squashes! *LOVE*

I'm not participating in Vegan MoFo either, I'm too rusty to post every day! :-)

i love all those little peppers - and hooray for more flying saucer squashes! they're adorable! no worries on not being able to mofo this year, Diann - it's all good. :) hooray for broccoli, fresh black-eyed peas, and roasted veggies! the gee whiz sounds most excellent, too. mmmmm!

do you like being a part of a CSA? i'm thinking about joining one nearby, but is it worth the money, etc?

That is a lot of peppers! You will be missed on Mofo, but I always come to your blog to see what's cooking! In our CSA today we got grapes and pears of all things. Never expected them this time of year. A nice surprise, oh and no more eggplant this week. :o) Wish I had some of your purple peppers or squash though.

Looks like a simple, satisfying dinner - colorful and healthy - just the way I like it. Are you getting bored with the box selection? Our boxes in Wis. were always so different from each other, depending on what was growing at any particular time. Your CSA box sure looks good, but if it's always the same, I guess it could get monotonous.

Your CSA box looks great to me, but I wonder why they didn't vary it. I love those yellow peppers but if I got them every week, that would get old really quick. The Gee Whiz sauce looks awesome too. :-)

Such beautiful purple pepper! You never seen any like that around here.

And don't worry- I can't even keep up in reading all of the veganmofo posts!

Gorgeous produce! You are lucky to be able to get such nice organic foods. And YAY for a good noochy sauce, nothing beats that.

I've never had fresh black-eyed peas! I'll bet they're so much better than dried or canned.

Purple peppers!!! I was at my in-laws a few weekends ago and they were on the menu at a restaurant we went to, and I wanted to find some at the store (it was attached to the restaurant), but none were too be found. Too bad for :( Fun for you!!!

Ooh, I'd love to get a crop like that from a CSA. I have to admit... I've never had okra. I've heard people talk about how gummy it is and that completely turns me off. I'm a wimp!

Those squash look truly amazing! Blackeyed peas are the best tasting bean out there I think! I like the nutty flavour because I'm allergic to peanuts; they are the closest in taste I think! Yum!
