I Have Converted!

I am now a green smoothie lover! Yep, I’ve been mixing them up for dessert this whole week. I start with a bunch of spinach or kale and then add in a chopped apple and a bit of whatever fresh or frozen fruits I have on hand.

I wish I had jumped on the smoothie bandwagon while VitaMix was being so generous with their blender giveaways. As you can see, my KitchenAid doesn’t make for very smooth smoothies. Oh, well, a chunky blend doesn’t seem so much like drinking my calories. Although it sure would be nice to blend up some silky smooth soups and grind my own flour.....

I’ve been grocery shopping, so I thought I would show you some of my purchases.

I got this huge local cauliflower at Whole Foods last week for $2. It’s sitting on a 10-inch dinner plate, which you can’t see. I got several good servings out of this thing!

These are locally made tortillas I also got from Whole Foods. They are fabulous and vegan. I only had a bite because they're made from flour and therefore not gluten free. My mom and son got to enjoy them.

These are my new favorite chips. If you want gluten free vegan crispy chips, I recommend them highly. Plus it’s fun to say Mr. Krispers.

Here’s the nutritionals if you’re interested.

I headed off to Whole Foods this morning, then turned around and headed to my awesome Asian supermarket. I hadn’t been there in a while and I’m glad I went because it’s always so fun to see what’s new and/or on special. Here’s what I got.

One thing I wanted to shop for was dried mushrooms – until I found these fresh ones. The shitakes were $2.30 and the enokis were $1.29. The daikon was 80 cents, snow peas $1.21, pears $1.49, kohlrabi $1.96, and peanut meal $1.59. The veggie bouillon is expensive but it’s the best in the world and I was completely out. I will be feasting on mushrooms tonight!

I got Chase some faux meat – pepper steak and chicken patties.

And I found some fruit chips! Katie blogged about fruit chips earlier this week and I was intrigued. These are not so healthy like the ones Katie got, but I bought them for Chase (he needs some fat).

The chips are obviously deep fried because they are very crispy. They are made from jackfruit, taro, pineapple, sweet potato, and banana. The jackfruit is really really good.

Now I’m off to make some seitan for Chase. I’ll probably deliver his Sunday dinner to him tomorrow. I’m not sure what I’ll make yet. I’m thinking about shredded barbecue seitan, but Bianca’s Un-chicken ’n’ Dumplins looked awfully good…..

LOOOOOVE green smoothies :-)

Your Asian market bounty looks great; I too love my local Asian market, primarily because all my favorite produce is super cheap! I was wondering, though, how does one use peanut meal?

I've had a craving for a green smoothie all week. I was going to make one this morning, but Mommy Dearest was still zzzzzzzzzzz-ing, so I thought it'd be rude to use the blender. Oh well, there's always tomorrow!

Ooh I remember Jackfruit and Taro from when I lived in Manila; I loved those fruits (but some of the Jackfruits they sold on the streets were as big as me!).

Great looking grocery finds! I haven't been able to talk myself into making a green smoothie yet, but your's sure looks delicious!

Chris, I'll use peanut meal like I would use almond meal in baked goods. I'll try to bake something with it soon.

Oh, it's been far too long since I've seen enoki mushrooms around- They're my absolute favorite! I'll keep an eye out next time I'm shopping now.

Mmm--fruit chips! They do sound good. I also love green smoothies--think I must make one tomorrow. And good luck getting that VitaMix (maybe they'll read the post and send you one!);)

Cilantro tortillas! Yum! That reminds me, I need to visit an Asian supermarket.

I just love green smoothies! Though, I haven't had one since November. I think the cold has had me thinking of warmer breakfasts! I also have a lame-o blender that tries its best, but isn't terribly powerful...
Great grocery haul!

I love grocery posts! There's so much interesting stuff to see. Stuff I'd never see here in G., like those amazing tortillas!

My smoothies look exactly like yours. I don't care so much for their looks as long as they taste good, ha ha. And yours sounds great.

Mmm cilantro tortillas?! Yummers! I just did a post about my recent asian market finds too. Hooray for all the vegan goodies we find there :)

Some cool finds there. I have yet to try jackfruit but I definitely will. I keep reading about its cool texture.

Green smoothies are the best. I'm still waiting for my Vitamix invite as well . . . hellooooo . . . . hehe anyway maybe next time.

Your purchases all look excellent. The only fruit chips I've had were plantain chips when we were in Ecuador. They tasted great but were probably not too healthy! I wish I could gather some enthusiasm for a green smoothie - not quite there yet.

I quite like bits in my smoothies, although I haven't had any for a while. I must get around to it soon.

Green smoothies are indeed the BOMB!
I love having them as dessert.

Hey, maybe if you contact Vitamix and show them your rockin' blog and ask for one to try... who knows? Maybe they'll do it! (You have a very nice page rank after all!)

Cheers,
Kristen

Awesome goodies Diann! So many shiitake mushrooms! Care to share? :)

If I had a VitaMix I would probably try green smoothies, but they would be a disgusting chunky mess made with our Magic Bullet!

My KitchenAid blender doesn't make the smoothest smoothies, either, but I'm in no position to buy a VitaMix or BlendTec and they wouldn't give me one! I'm shocked that they didn't include you in their give away.

Thanks for continuing to blog about GF vegan food. My mom has Crohn's and Celiac and I'm constantly on the look out for her. She's not vegan, but I get to exert my influence. ;)

My aunt got me a vitamix last week! I am so overwhelmed, but I also love it so much. I still have never had a green smoothie, but I'm sure it will happen soon.

the tropical fruit chips sound super yummy. I remember being so surprised when I learned that banana chips were so fatty and not very good for you. Sigh!

Yay! Another green smoothie fan - aren't they fantastic? I am sipping on one right now. I am using a cheapie blender too, but I still manage to get smooth green smoothies - try adding a bit more water and blending even longer to get a smoother consistency.

Oh how I wish I hadn't just inhaled a ton of sunflower seeds. I would have much rather had a green smoothie. I'll have to keep it in mind for next time.

Love the Asian grocery finds!

Those crunchy chips are most likely vacuum fried, not deep fried. We get them here in Malaysia. they are yummy! Not as fatty as regular deep fried either.

I also went to the asian market this weekend, but my haul wasn't nearly as fun as yours. Those mushrooms are so cheap!
